BAMBOO U: Bamboo building and design
A 7 day intensive course focused on designing and building with bamboo. Packed with theory, practice and challenge. You will learn about award-winning bamboo architecture and gain an inside view into the design- and build methods that have evolved here in Bali. Experience a balance of hands-on workshops and engaging talks on practical theory led by Balinese bamboo craftsmen and sustainability innovators from GreenCamp as well as from Ibuku, the company behind Green School and Green Village.
Bamboo is a woody, valuable, strong and exceptionally fast-growing grass. It is sustainable and renewable; a bamboo shoot can become a structural column within three years, it can be treated and stand tall for 50 years, and it has a three- year growth cycle and high carbon sequestration capacity – making it an efficient and responsible resource for building.
During the course we will teach you the basics of building with bamboo: from selecting to harvesting and treating, to scaled bamboo model making, to basic bamboo design and construction methods. You will visit some of the most spectacular bamboo buildings in the world and observe and work alongside Balinese master craftsmen.
This course will cover:
1. Learning about the bamboo plant: its characteristics and ecological benefits
2. Learning the different types of bamboo and how to identify them
3. Traditional bamboo harvesting
4. Pests, pathogens, and treatment methods
5. Making basic bamboo splits, planks, and joints
6. Creating bamboo structural models to scale
7. Bamboo structure building: A team-based building challenge
The course is open for ages 16 +
Accommodation
All set in Green School’s eco- innovative site that is filled with examples of bamboo building in action. Participants will be staying in our new accommodation: the Green Institute Lodge. Ibuku, the design-firm behind the world- renowned Green School and Green Village, designed the structure. The Lodge is located on the east side of our site perched just above Bali’s Ayung River, surrounded by its own terrace of rice paddies and organic gardens. It is built entirely of bamboo and takes the shape of a hexagon with bunk-beds around the perimeter, and a common area in the middle. It is two stories tall and can accommodate 40 people (20 on each floor). The lodge is equipped with fans, lights, blankets, towels, individual lockers for valuables, and separate male and female bathroom facilities supported by wastewater gardens.
